PE

Subject Intent

Students at The Park receive two hours of PE lesson time a week, in line with the National Curriculum. The PE programme is designed to meet the needs of all our students and engage them in regular physical activity in a  positive, fun and enjoyable way. The curriculum that we offer across all key stages is fully inclusive and varied and we aim to promote a lifelong interest in sport and exercise for our students during and beyond their time at school.

Through their PE lessons, all of our students are encouraged to develop their confidence in a variety of sporting areas. They are also required to make decisions, solve problems and demonstrate determination and resilience, while working at their own pace and level.

In KS3, students experience a wide spectrum of sporting activities. This allows them to learn and develop skills and teaches them how to work both independently and with others and in competitive and non-competitive situations. Students follow a fitness unit that allows them to understand the impact that physical activity has on their own health and why it is so important for their physical, mental and social well-being.

The curriculum in KS4 is a continuation of skill acquisition and development, with the emphasis on knowing how to access sport and leisure opportunities for the future. We aim to allow students to experience activities which they otherwise may not have the chance to do elsewhere. KS4 students continue to learn how they can take responsibility for their health, fitness and well-being and they also have the opportunity to achieve a Level 1 Sports Leadership qualification through working with their peers and younger students.

We are fortunate to have positive collaborations with local secondary schools and leisure facilities in and around Woking, and beyond, where our students can make use of excellent and up to date sporting and fitness facilities. We also endeavour to give all of our students, across the school opportunities to experience a wide variety of sporting events off site, including fixtures against other schools, which allows them to gain confidence in a number of ways.

How we assess in PE

As well as focussing on the specific skills within each activity that we cover in PE, all students will be assessed through the Head (cognitive application), Heart (character development) and Hands (physical application) programme.

We offer a Level 1 qualification in Sports Leadership in Year 11.

Enrichment opportunities

We organise and take part in regular school fixtures and events where we can and we aim for all of our students to have the opportunity to take part in these during their time at The Park. We relish and take up opportunities to work with outside agencies such as British Orienteering, Woking Tennis Club and Surrey County Cricket and we have links to local inclusive clubs and sport providers where we can signpost students to join a sports club outside of school. We offer many sporting opportunities at lunchtime as well as an afterschool football club all year round. Our curriculum incorporates numerous trips out to use local sporting facilities across all year groups.

How can I support my child with their learning?

Talk about what they did in the lesson.

Look at examples of sports activities on the TV or internet.

Watch or join in activities at outside clubs or at your local sports park.

Practise the key skills for each activity with your son or daughter.

Encourage your child to be active and participate in physical activity.

Explore sporting opportunities in your local area.
