Art & Design

Subject Intent

Creativity and the Arts are placed at the heart of The Park School’s curriculum. As a school we strive to provide exemplar practice in developing communication and interaction skills, the Arts provide a unique vehicle to aid communication that can change the way a student feels, thinks and acts. All students, whatever level of ability, are encouraged to design, create, explore (new skills) and perform or display their achievements and talents through multiple platforms.

The aim of the creative industries at The Park School is to:

  • Provide a range of stimulating, enjoyable arts experiences that are accessible to all students.

  • Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of the arts through designing, creating, appraising, performing and exhibiting.

  • Provide a variety of opportunities through lessons, workshops, visiting artists, educational visits,  extra-curricular activities and opportunities to perform and share work with the wider community.

The teaching of Art & Design at The Park School aims to develop learner’s practical skills and knowledge in line with the national curriculum.

How we assess in Art & Design

In KS3, work undertaken is continually assessed throughout workshop activities, group and individual discussion, and Q and A.

In Year 10 and 11, work will be looked at in reference to the requirements of the GCSE programme, and the grading criteria will be continuously checked against and discussed.

Progress is checked during each class and within both group and individual discussion.

Enrichment opportunities

Visiting practitioners across a range of art and design disciplines, off site visits to local and national museums and galleries. Opportunities for after school sessions for GCSE learners.

How can I support my child with their learning?

Ask what they are working on and get them to explain how they have made their work.

Assist in any work that is undertaken outside of taught sessions.
