Music
Subject Intent
KS3 students participate in a weekly lesson that is linked to a themed unit of work. Curriculum resources are used to deliver practical, authentic and relevant music lessons that engage all pupils in learning music. Students learn to play chords on chime bars, keyboard, ukulele and sing popular songs.Other activities include making music by chair drumming, body percussion or using untuned percussion instruments.
We listen to and appraise music from the BBC Ten Pieces which opens up the world of classical compositions.
Performance opportunities include the Harvest choir , Christmas singers, and a relaxed performance of songs from The Magic Flute. Students can take part in showcasing chair drumming and playing along to a two chord jam in assembly
Students have access to Garage Band on the iPad to experiment with simple compositions.
In Year 9 students take part in the AQA Unit Award Scheme which allows students to have their achievements formally recognised.Learners are rewarded with a certificate each time they successfully complete a unit of learning. The scheme is designed to boost confidence, increase engagement and improve motivation.
We use music as a medium to increase confidence, boost self-esteem, creativity and a sense of achievement. Fostering a love of music enhances student’s well-being and can equip them with a life-long leisure activity.
